BOILER INSPECTION TRAINING

PROJECT TYPE – Insite Training
PARTNERS – TÜV Süd Academy

Look_insite_Text-Hat

An opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a variety of large boilers, including both coal and gas-fired models, designed for training in their inspection and maintenance. This Insite includes informative video explainers and provides internal access to the boilers for an immersive learning experience.

Process

Aim:

Illustrate how to safely access the interior, shut down, and restart a large-scale boiler while highlighting key factors to consider during an inspection.

Challenge:

Develop proficiency in navigating the layout and access points of various boiler types while showcasing specific operational techniques for managing the boilers during inspections. Additionally, enhance understanding of the interior of confined spaces and explore how one might safely gain access to these challenging areas.

Solution:

Our approach involved employing two distinct types of 360º photography techniques to capture intricate details in external areas. We utilized one-shot 360° cameras that enabled us to access restricted spaces, enhanced by the use of invisible lighting that remained undetectable in the photographs. Additionally, we collaborated with our partner at TÜV Süd to produce supplementary video sequences that effectively demonstrated access and other related aspects.

Restricted space shooting

The nature of boilers is that they are enclosed spaces where things get burned. That makes them difficult to access but also hazardous. This is of course the nature of the training but also provides the challenge of not only placing a camera and taking the photos but making sure that you can see everything. Lighting in 360° photography is tricky because you can see everything - that means the lights will be visible as well. We used a combination of an illuminated tripod directly underneath the camera and lights hidden behind objects to make sure that everything was visible and pleasing result was achieved.

Embedded Video

The most useful teaching method in this case was video demonstrators. Our expert on site performed a series of actions for the camera including operating valves and climbing in and out the boilers themselves. These were placed in relation to the action as a hotspot.

Location

The shoot took place at a decommissioned American army base north of Munich, and entering the site was a captivating experience due to the strict security measures in place. This location was ideal because it featured a room filled with large-scale boilers representing nearly every era of heating technology from the past century.

Team

Supervision of the project and composition of the training material was performed by Florian Laupichler at TÜV Süd Academy. The excellent stills photographs and videos were shot by Adam Haranghy. The specialist on site that supported us to investigate the boilers was Burkhard Hammel.

A Museum of Boilers

The range of boiler designs  were fascinating. The coal powered boiler room was fascinatingly ingenious. The floor of the room was in fact a conveyor belt on which the coal was brought in and ignited once it entered the room burning through until it was expired and then exiting at the other side. The walls of the room were completely covered in water pipes, presumably the cold water would enter on and hot water leave the other. Such a simple concept but beautifully realised.
